Communact was set up in 2003 after I left drama school in London to forge links between the arts communities of Scotland and England and in particular Glasgow and London, hence the original company name M1 M8 productions. My surname ‘Zanone’ translated means ‘big fangs’ or big teeth so a ‘BigTeeth’ production also played its part in the formation of our core members relationships with Kenny Mc Coll of MunchkinMedia Company, the Cottiers theatre ,the Annexe in Partick and our dealings with community centers on a whole. The idea of a ‘refuge for all communities’ led to a project called “Refuge for communities” and this was to give rise to the name ‘Commun’ or a Commune. Productions then moved into film and community interest work especially in the field of English language learning, rehabilitation, addicts in recovery and the emerging new migrant worker population who are also in need of a ‘refuge’ where they can express themselves artistically.
Any proceeds should be not for profit and will go towards bolstering the promotion of employment and human rights. We look to work with social enterprises who can work with our target population and our over arching plan is be involved as a media group who work with housing associations and charities. My group hopes one day to become community interest company (CommunAct) who work in Scotland and further afield to try to alleviate problems within our inner cities by offering advocacy, start up help in new accommodation, occupational health therapy by way of the expressive arts and finally training programmes where clients learn transferable skills in devising new work, across the mediums of art, theatre and film-all this using the viable product of events, new play readings, new performances of shows and screenings socially benefitting all involved whether they behind the scenes or not. For the time being I will be trading as a sole trader under the name the ‘CommunAct company’. For those initiatives sourced by CommunAct our practitioners can invoice me directly.
